Critic K.P. Appan Passed Away

Malayalam literary critic K.P. Appan passed away on Monday. He was 72. He is survived by wife, Omana, and sons, Rajith and Sreejith. A family member said the end came at a private hospital in Kayamkulam at 8.30 a.m. He had been battling with cancer for almost three years. He was discharged from the Regional Cancer Centre, Thiruvananthapuram, two weeks ago. The family is awaiting the arrival of a close relative from London and the funeral will take place at 10 a.m. on Tuesday with State honours at the Polayathodu public crematorium here. The news of his demise was received with shock by people from all walks of life. A huge crowd of his admirers and students arrived at his house at Mundakkal in the city on hearing the news. By the time the body arrived from Kayamkulam, there was a big rush of people waiting to pay their last respects. The body is being kept at the house for the people to pay their last respects. Among those who paid their last respects were Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan, Education Minister M.A. Baby, Law Minister M. Vijayakumar, novelist Kakanadan, poet O.N.V. When Things Fall Apart : Tracking a cultural change

                    A group of final year B.A.Mass Communication students,who calls themselves 'Alpha',has come out with a documentary on the alienation of tribal group from the mainstream in wayanad.The film When Things Fall Apart ,was released by Civic Chandran,social activist,and exhibited at Trident Arcade Auditorium in Kalpetta on sunday(28-08-08).The documentary portrays the socio-cultural changes that ethnic tribes were forced to undergo after non-tribal section migrated to wayanad in the first half of the last centuray.The group members ,who are students of N.M.S.M. Govt. college,Kalpetta,have made an earnest attempt to reveal the impact created by the visual media and modern inventions on the life of the ethinic people.

Grave losses

   Though they have accepted the changes in the society,these have adversely affected the cultural idendity they had acquired through centuries.As a result of these changes they have lost touch with their ethnical dialects,arts,music,dress,rituals and even the cultural idendity.

  These changes,the transformation of these rustic people from primeval to modernity,and the consequances of these changes are the main themes of the documentary.

   The documentary also points out the causes of segregation of the tribal people from the main stream.These students  maiden venture cost Rs.43,000.They raised the amount from even doing manual labour.

ഒന്ന്‌ എരിഞ്ഞുതീരുമെന്ന്‌ അമേരിക്ക കരുതിയ ഇറാഖ്‌ യുദ്ധം അധിനിവേശത്തിണ്റ്റെ ആറാം വര്‍ഷത്തിലേയ്ക്ക്‌ കടന്നിരിക്കുന്നു.രാജ്യത്തെയാകമാനം നിലപരിശാക്കി മാറ്റിയ അമേരിക്കയുടെ ധാര്‍ഷ്ട്യം വ്യതാസങ്ങളില്ലാത്ത അടുത്ത ആക്രമണത്തിനായി തയ്യാറെടുക്കുകയാണ്‌.പ്രധാനമായും മൂന്ന്‌ ലക്ഷ്യങ്ങള്‍ ഉന്നയിച്ചാണ്‌ ബുഷിണ്റ്റെ സാമ്രാജ്യം ആക്രമണത്തിനു തുടക്കമിട്ടത്‌.ഇറാഖില്‍ രാസായുധത്തിണ്റ്റെ വ്ന്‍ ശേഖരമുണ്ടെന്നുള്ളതായിരുന്നു ആദ്യത്തെ ആരോപണം.ഇറാഖിലെ തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കപ്പെട്ട ഗവണ്‍ മെണ്റ്റിണ്റ്റെ തലവന്‍ സദ്ദാം ഹുസൈനെ ഭരണത്തില്‍ നിന്നും നിഷ്കാസനം ചെയ്യുക,ഇറാഖിനെ സ്വതന്ത്രമാക്കുക,എന്നിവയായിരുന്നു അമേരിക്കയുടെ മറ്റ്‌ സാമ്രജ്യത്വ താത്പര്യങ്ങള്‍. ഇറാഖില്‍ രാസായുധങ്ങള്‍ ഇല്ലെന്ന യു.എന്‍.രക്ഷാസമിതിയുടെ റിപ്പോര്‍ട്ടൊന്നും അമേരിക്കയ്ക്ക്‌ അംഗീകരിക്കത്തക്കതായിരുന്നില്ല.രാസായുധങ്ങളുണ്ടെന്ന "വെറും"ആരോപണത്തിലൂടെ ഇറാഖിലെ അക്രമ പരമ്പരകള്‍ക്ക്‌ അമേരിക്ക തുടക്കമിട്ടു.ഇറാഖ്‌ യുദ്ധത്തിലെ അമേരിക്കയുടെ ലക്ഷ്യങ്ങളിലൊന്നായ സദ്ദാം ഹുസൈനെ തൂക്കിലേറ്റിയാണ്‌ ധീരത പ്രകടിപ്പിച്ചത്‌. ഇറാഖിനേയും,ഇറാഖ്‌ ജനതയേയും സ്വതന്ത്രമാക്കുക എന്നതിലുപരി ഇറാഖിലെ കണക്കറ്റ എണ്ണ സമ്പത്തായിരുന്നു ബുഷിണ്റ്റേയും കൂട്ടരുടെയും ലക്ഷ്യം.ഇറാഖ്‌ ജനതയ്ക്കെന്ന പേരില്‍ അമേരിക്ക സ്രിഷ്ട്ടിച്ചെടുത്ത പാവ സര്‍ക്കാരിലൂടെ ആരുടെ ആവശ്യങ്ങളാണ്‌ നിറവേറ്റപ്പെടുന്നതെന്ന്‌ സുവ്യക്തം. അവശേഷിപ്പുകള്‍ ഒന്നും ബാക്കി വെയ്ക്കാതെയാണ്‌ അധിനിവേശത്തിണ്റ്റെ അറാം വര്‍ഷം പിറവിയെടുക്കുന്നത്‌.തകര്‍ന്നു തരിപ്പണങ്ങളായ കെട്ടിടങ്ങളും,ദുരിതം പേറുന്ന ജനങ്ങളും ലോകജനതയ്ക്കു മുന്‍പില്‍ ചിത്രങ്ങളാവുന്നു.

മാനന്തവാടി: വയനാടന്‍ ജനതയുടെ ദേശീയ ഉത്സവമായ വള്ളിയൂര്‍ക്കാവ്‌ ഉത്സവത്തിന്‌ കൊടിയേറി.മീനം രണ്ട്‌ മുതല്‍ അഞ്ച്‌ വരെ നീണ്ടുനില്‍ക്കുന്ന ഉത്സവത്തിന്‌ വളരെയേറെ ചരിത്രപ്രാധാന്യമുണ്ട്‌.അടിമചന്തയുടെ കദ പറയുന്ന വള്ളിയൂര്‍ക്കാവില്‍ പണിയവിഭാഗത്തിനാണ്‌ എറെ പ്രാധാന്യമുള്ളത്‌.രണ്ട്‌ കാവുകളുടെ പ്രത്യേകത അവകാശപ്പെടുന്ന ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ മുഖ്യ പ്രതിഷ്ഠ ദുര്‍ഗ്ഗാദേവിയാണ്‌. ഇന്ന്‌ ദേവസ്വം ബോര്‍ഡിണ്റ്റെ പ്രധാനവരുമാന മാര്‍ഗ്ഗങ്ങളില്‍ ഒന്നായ വള്ളിയൂര്‍ക്കാവില്‍ പൂര്‍വികരെ ഒഴിവാക്കിയുള്ള ഉത്സവമാണ്‍' ഇപ്പോള്‍ നടക്കുന്നത്‌.പണ്ടത്തെ ഉത്സവാധികാരികള്‍ ഇന്നു പുറം പണിക്കാരായി മാറിയിരിക്കുന്നു.ആദിവാസിസംസ്കാരത്തകര്‍ച്ചയുടെ ഉത്തമോദാഹരണമായി മാറിയിരിക്കുന്നു ഇന്നത്തെ വള്ളിയൂര്‍ക്കാവ്‌.
